Western Asia. The Sumerians [Gilgamesh cunningly exchanges Huvava's rays {i.e. magic weapon}. In most manuscripts, G. promises, accompanied by an oath, to give Huvava his older sister Enmebarageshi as his wife and his younger sister Mathur as a concubine. In return, Huvava gives him all seven of his rays. Huvawa's rays are described as trees: young men who come with Gilgamesh cut off branches from them and put together bundles of them at the foot of the mountain. Enmebarageshi is the name of King Kish, who, according to the Mesopotamian tradition, was a contemporary of Gilgamesh. Apparently, G. promises Huvava a fictional sister as his wife (on the contrary, his younger sister's name, Matur, is also known from other Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh). By naming his sister after King Kish, G. ridicules Huvava as an ignorant savage who knows nothing about the world beyond his forest. Several manuscripts include an extended version of this episode. The most interesting is a source of unknown origin, according to which Huvava gives his rays in exchange for gifts from G. The plaque retained the description of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth gifts. Perhaps the first two in this version were G. (in which case, subsequent gifts can be considered as a kind of dowry). G. exchanges Huvava's third ray for ash flour, food of the gods, and a wineskin of cold water, the fourth ray for Huvawa's big sandals, and the fifth for small sandals for "little ones" "Huvava" legs, the sixth on semi-precious stones (chlorite", striped agate (?) , lapis lazuli).
