H44. Heaven and Earth share children. .13.20.23.25.

Two characters, one connected to the sky or water, and the other to the earth, or to the spirit world and the human world, share the child they have born or the people they created. The sky (Water, Spirit) takes the imperishable part, the Earth (man) takes the perishable part.

Malgashi, Maldives, Cook Islands (southern?) , Ancient India, Igorot, (nabaloi, kankanai), ifugao, saisha.

South Asia. Ancient India (Rigveda) [after giving birth to seven children, Aditi then gave birth to another, or rather twin boys; in the womb, the twin promised to take the kingdom away from the brothers; they achieved that A. threw it away; one of the twins became Indra; the other half was a "dead egg"; on their own initiative or at the mother's request, the brothers decided to keep it; this is Mārtānda ("from a dead egg") The ancestor of the people, Vivaswant, was born from him; or the egg was a lump of flesh that the brothers cut into two halves, alive and dead; the Rikwed version suggests that the mother left Martanda on earth, and she took to heaven with her divine twin]: {look at RV; retelling by Eijirō Dōyama. Malgashi (Betsimisaraka): Abrahamsson 1951:115-116 [Earth-Ratany made a human figure out of wood, asked Nebo-Ralanitra to revive it; after a while R. sent the son of the gods for human; B. agreed to give only the soul, and let the body remain on Earth], 116 [1) the first couple made human figures out of wood and clay; Zanahary's son agreed to revive them, but did not receive payment; therefore, she takes her soul, but the ashes remain; 2) the daughter of heaven Zanahari married earthly Z. (the first man); they made human figures; the wife breathed soul into them; the couple divorced, each took theirs; 3) six Zanahari created the sky to have a place to live; the first three also created the earth to walk; one of them, Ratsivalanorama, was sent to live on earth, but he decided to live in the depths of the earth; created a man and a woman out of clay, could not revive; he was visited by heavenly Z., he asked to revive figures; they agreed, asked him to make birds and animals as well; they dropped a grain of rice, the rice was only in the sky, R. grew it now on earth for people; envious, the heavenly Z. sent it to earth misfortune and death; R. told people he would keep at least what he had done - bodies], 116-117 (prov. Micronesia-Polynesia. Cook Islands (southern?) [Vatea and Tonga-iti (Var.: Tangaroa) both claimed to be the father of the first child born to Earth-Papa; cut it; Vatea took the upper half, threw it into the sky, it became the sun; Tonga-iti got the lower half, it stayed on the ground; later, imitating Vatea, he also threw it to the sky; this half had already partially decomposed, blood flowed out of it, so what was thrown became a pale moon]: Dixon 1916:37.

Taiwan - Philippines.
