I98B. The Pleiades are a duck's nest. (.18.20.) .28.31.32.34.35.

Pleiades are ducks, wild duck's nest or egg.

(Nizhny Murray, Tahiti), Russians (Arkhangelsk, Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Oryol, Pskov, Tver, Kursk, Perm, Orenburg, Siberia), Veps, Mordovians , Udmurts, Komi-Zyrians, Khakas, Tundra Nenets, Mansi, Eastern Khanty.

Harva 1933:135, note 78, referring to Khudyakov 1890:138 and Krasheninnikov 1994 {1755} (2): 218 {actually p.160}, indicates that the Yakuts and Koryaks also called the Pleiades Utich nest (Eräät Siperian pohjoisimmat kansat, kuten jakutit, korjakit ja vogulit nimittävät sitä linnun - tai sorsanpesäksi). Referring to the German translation of Harva 1938, this is repeated by Mladenova 2006:196. This is a mistake: both authors referred to by W. Harva meant the Russian name. {The meaning of Koryak Atág is to find out}.

(Wed. Australia. Albert Lake (Adelaide District) [Pleiades are eggs on which a turkey sits]: Clarke 1976:128.

(Wed. Micronesia-Polynesia. Tahiti [Pleiades - E hwettu ohwaa, "nest stars"]: Forster 1783:441 in Andrew 1878:107; =1893:363).

Central Europe. Russians: Potanin 1883 [Nizhny Novgorod: Duck's Nest; Vyatsk: Bird's Nest]: 730; Ruth 1976 [Duck's Nest: Pskov, Tverskaya, Oryol, Amur; Duck's Nest: Arkhangelsk, Perm, Siberia]: 35; 1987 [Duck (Uchiye, Uchye) Nest - Oryol, Pskov, Tver, Arkhangelsk, Siberia; Bird's Nest - Kursk, Oryol, Orenburg; Bird's Nest - Arkhangelsk, Perm]: 15; Holy 1913 [Petersburg: Duck's Nest; Kursk, Oryol, Orenburg: Bird's Nest]: 147; Tyurina 1972 [all groups of dialects have the DUCK NEST combination, denoting the Pleiades; in Nizhneobsky and Sredneobsky - DUCK NEST, in Sredneobsky and Tomsk - DUCK NEST, in the Tomsk district sometimes just a DUCK]: 54.

Baltoscandia. Veps (Kuya-Pondala, Babayevsky District, Vologda Oblast, 2007) [Pleiades - sorzan-peza ("Duck's Nest"); west from bilingual Russified Veps, so Russian borrowing is not entirely excluded]: Materials from the astronomical file of the Toponymic Expedition of the Ural Federal University, Yekaterinburg (reported by E.L. Berezovich on February 6, 2014).

Volga - Perm. Komi-Zyryans [Chezh-Kotyr ("chezh" - duck, "Kotyr" - uterus with chicks]: Potanin 1883:942; (cf. Inaccurate translation into Holy 1961 [Pleiades - Chezh-Kotyr ("A Flock of Ducks")]: 120); Udmurts: Kirillova 2011 [Pleiades: (Cher) puzhkizili - "(rare) sieve star"; along with Chöshkarkizili, "duck's nest star"]: 238; Napolsky, personal report 2007 ["duck's nest"] quoted from Wichmann 1987; Mordovians [Pleiades: Ozonyan Regiment ("duck's nest")]: Erdődi 1970:97 in Kirillova 2011:239.

Southern Siberia - Mongolia. Khakas [hunter Tülün-hara chased seven blue ducks for seven years, they rose to heaven and became the Pleiades; the Kyzyl people call the Pleiades Örek Uyazi or Hus Uyazi ("Duck nest"); T. turned into Aldebaran, he still hunts]: Butanayev 1975:238.

Western Siberia. Tundra Nenets [Pleiades: Nyaby sar'nu - "duck egg"]: Khomich 1974:232; (cf. Enz [Pleiades - Kondiku, "duck's nest"]: Ruth 1987:47; {this is a mistake; in personal 2008, Ruth refers to the Long 1961:24; there: "this is Kondiku (in Russian "Duck's Nest", "Lump" [i.e. Pleiades]; "The duck's nest is used as a Russian name, not an Enets name}); Mansi (Tavda, Pelym, Lozva, Sosva, Konda) [Pleiades: "wild duck's nest", "Gogol's nest", "Gogol's brood"]: Napolsky, personal report 2007 with quotes from Munkácsi, Kálmán 1996; Munkácsi 1908:255; Eastern Khanty (Tromyegan) ["duck's nest" (some constellation)]: Napolsky, personal report 2007 with cit. from Steinitz 1966-1993.
