A

zoomorphic character drops his tongue or tail into the water. The octopus or shell grabs it and holds it firmly, so that the character drowns at high tide.

Basques, Bretons, (Minahasa).

Southern Europe. Basques [the wolf caught crabs near the shore, put its tail into the water; an octopus grabbed his tail; while the water was rising and the wolf was drowning, the fox laughed]: Camarena, Chevalier 1997, No. 2E: 20-21.

Western Europe. The Bretons [the fox persuaded the wolf to lick the sea saucers (shells) with his tongue; they slammed shut and the wolf could not raise his head; fox: try as soon as the water arrives]: Delarue, Tenèze 1976: 477.
