The owner consistently sends others to herd a goat (a herd of goats). The goat eats plenty of grass, but each time it replies to the owner that it was starved. He is outraged, killing or driving away shepherds. Convinced that the goat is lying, he is going to kill it. Either the owner begins to peel off a live goat's skin, the goat runs away. Most versions combine both motifs.
